This study explored the factors that influence the environmental conservation of Lake Dambal and its watershed area, using a quantitative and qualitative method. The descriptive and explanatory design were used in the study, and 385 samples were drawn from Adami Tulu J/K/woreda (110) in Dugda (120) and Zeway Dugda (110) using a stratified random sampling procedure. Samples were drawn based on their direct attachment to their livelihood and responsibilities for the research region. Data were gathered using survey instruments, observations, focus group discussions, formal interviews, and secondary sources. Ordered logistic regression models for the three environmental conservation dimensions (environmental concern, environmental awareness and environmental participation) were regressed on socio-economic and demographic variables using STATA-16. The results showed that the schooling level, distance from the lake, household size, household income, sources of income and adequacy of household’s income were found as significant determinants of environmental concern, whereas age of respondent’s, schooling level, distance from the lake, household size, household income, and sources of income were found as significant determinants of environmental awareness. Gender, schooling level, distance from the lake and adequacy of household’s income were found as significant determinants of environmental participation Qualitative investigation found that incorrect reports for political consumption, limited government attention, and a lack of an integrated natural resource management policy and plan were important barriers to conservation. The authorities must prioritize the development of a vivid and comprehensive destination management policy that allows for the participation of all stakeholders.
